"Kuya" means "older brother", and "Ate" means "older syster". These are respectful titles giving to older people in the Philippines, but are more than that. Filipino society is a very inclusive society, where family groups and kinship groups are ever expanding. It's the Filipino way of saying we are all part of a larger family, and it shows how they wish to relate to you and how they wish you will relate to them in return. Important information for those of you in Australian Filipina relationships to understand Filipino culture.
